Nick Young
About

Hailing from Rochester, N.Y., singer-songwriter Nick Young’s songs combine power pop hooks with country-tinged roots rock to form an energetic sound that’s familiar, yet all its own.  After several years as the frontman and principal songwriter of the critically acclaimed alt-country band Burning Daylight, Young spent much of 2010 recording his solo debut record in Nashville, Tennessee with producer Jim Reilley (of The New Dylans). With the help of Reilley and with legendary pedal steel player Al Perkins (Gram Parsons) and drummer Ken Coomer (Wilco) augmenting Young’s Americana/Power Pop sound, the album “Truth Is” was released on November 30, 2010.  Since its release, Young has traveled more than 30,000 miles in support of the record, armed with an acoustic guitar, his songs, his voice and an authentic passion for performing.

PRESS:

"Young writes and performs my favorite kind of music – Americana/Alt.country/Roots/The New Sincerity/Whatever the Hell You Call It. Formerly the frontman for Rochester’s Burning Daylight, Young just released his first solo album, Truth Is. If you’re fond of pedal steel guitars and twang, and post-Replacements Paul Westerberg, pick it up.

-Nick Zaino (Boston Music Critic)

"Nick Young's sound is a stripped-down Americana and lush pop smoothie. Yeah, there's a splash of country sour mash too, but it doesn't require boots and a hat. And though Young leans heavily on his love of the alt-country medium, his penchant for melody and hooks takes away some of the requisite melancholy. You'll hear the Earle, but the Costello is in there, too. It's fine-tuned and well-worn Americana that'll still give you heartache and splinters."

"Fresh & boisterous alt-country."

-Portland Phoenix

"Songs like "Nicotine & Tar" and "Wait For Me" simmer with a back-porch Southern vibe, while tunes like "Gone" are raw Americana, Young's indie-rock voice gives the album a contrasting feel. On paper, you'd never expect it to make sense. But the truth is, it works pretty well."

-Rochester Democrat & Chronicle

"The constant is Nick's voice, bearing the strain of injury and betrayal, yet enduring and resilient, a marriage of lyric and voice appealing to both the determined and the suicidal."

-Livingston County News

"If you follow the alt-country ladder up from Gram Parsons to Wilco, at the very top you might find Nick Young. Nick has written a lot of great songs, and he plays them with a fiery, raw energy that takes the genre further, into a deeper, darker place."

-Chris Trapper (Singer/Songwriter, The Push Stars)

"Contagious songs in the alt-country mode, sounding like a cross between Wilco, the Old 97's and vintage Soul Asylum."

-Freetime Magazine

"Spinning stories of love and loss that flirt with the edge of rock, Nick Young debuts his solo material with 'Truth Is'."
